Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, champion of Interfaith Dialogue, dies at 72
Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, passed away on November 25, 2024, at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.
A steadfast advocate for interfaith dialogue, Cardinal Ayuso played a pivotal role in Pope Francis' efforts to strengthen relationships between Catholics and followers of other faiths.
Born in Seville, Spain, on June 17, 1952, he was deeply influenced by the Christian and Islamic heritage of his hometown.
After joining the Comboni Missionaries and studying Islamic studies, he became an expert in interreligious relations, particularly with Islam.
Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot's missionary journey began in Cairo, Egypt, where he served the Latin community and assisted Sudanese Catholic youth.
His path led him to war-torn Sudan and eventually to academic leadership as President of the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI).
In 2007, his expertise earned him a role as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
Elevated to Prefect in 2019, Cardinal Ayuso became a key figure in the Church’s global efforts to promote dialogue with Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and other religious communities.
Cardinal Ayuso accompanied Pope Francis on numerous apostolic journeys, including to the UAE, Morocco, Iraq, Kazakhstan, and Bahrain.
His contributions to building bridges between religions earned him worldwide recognition, and his legacy continues to inspire the Church’s mission of fraternity and peaceful coexistence among faiths.
