As Pope Francis continues to recover from bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, will preside over the traditional Ash Wednesday liturgy on the Aventine Hill on March 5.

Following an ancient Roman tradition revived by St. John XXIII, the Ash Wednesday “stational” liturgy will begin at 4:30 PM in the Church of Sant’Anselmo, followed by a penitential procession to the Basilica of Santa Sabina, where the Eucharistic celebration will take place, including the rite of blessing and the imposition of ashes.

The procession will include cardinals, archbishops, bishops, the Benedictine Monks of Sant’Anselmo, the Dominican Fathers of Santa Sabina, and members of the faithful.

Due to Pope Francis' hospitalization, Cardinal De Donatis has been delegated to preside over the ceremony in his place.

Archbishop Giovanni Diego Ravelli, Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, has requested that Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, Benedictine Monks, and Dominican Fathers wishing to participate arrive at Sant’Anselmo by 4 PM in proper choir attire.
