China-Vatican relations

After “appropriate consultation and assessment,” the Holy See and the People's Republic of China agree to extend for another two years the validity of the agreement first concluded in 2018. The Holy See intends to continue a respectful and constructive dialogue to further the mission of the Catholic Church and the good of the Chinese people.

The Catholic Church in China ordained a new bishop for the Diocese of Pingliang in the country’s north-central province of Gansu on July 28.

The Vatican has renewed this week a controversial “provisional agreement” with China on the appointment of Catholic bishops.

A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said Thursday that China’s interim deal with the Vatican has been “implemented successfully.”
