Peacekeeping operations have evolved from simply monitoring ceasefire to protecting civilians, disarming ex-combatants, protecting human rights, promoting the rule of law, supporting free and fair elections, mitigating the threat of land-mines, and much more.

Every May 29, the world marks International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. It is a chance to pay tribute to the invaluable contribution of uniformed and civilian personnel and to honor more than 3,800 peacekeepers who have lost their lives while rendering peacekeeping services.
