Caritas Philippines, the social action arm of the Catholic Church, has strongly criticized the Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC) for allocating funds to finance large-scale mining, calling it a betrayal of public trust and a threat to the environment and communities.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo said that full transparency of the Church’s expenditures can help dispel criticisms claiming it only exploits the poor and the needy for profit and selfish goals.

Fr. Labiao also hopes that the project will not only spread the purpose of the encyclical Laudato Si' of His Holiness Francis but also generate employment in the communities and further prevent the worsening climate crisis.
