India: Church journeys with youth with spiritual, emotional and social growth

A parish in the Archdiocese of Bombay, western India, nurtures youth providing pastoral care that fosters their spiritual, emotional, and social growth.

The parish youth of St. Francis de Sales Church in Koperkhairane are blessed. Under the guidance of Father Mario, MSFS and the dedicated Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) sisters, youth are well nurtured.

“We try to instil in youth that God remains the ultimate source of strength,” said Sister Mariam Joseph, FMM. “Jesus serves as the role model from whom our youth can draw courage and inspiration.”

The parish is in the vibrant semi-city of new Mumbai. It reflects a fast-paced lifestyle rich in culture and opportunity.

“Here, we have formed a dynamic and active youth group that plays a pivotal role in the life of the parish,” the nun said.

The FMM sisters are deeply involved in mentoring the youth.

“Our youth programs are designed to cultivate a variety of skills, enabling young people to grow and shine in every field,” said Sister Mariam.

Youth learn communication skills and gain the courage to face life's challenges, all while walking in unity with one another.

The various youth programs are anchored on "Keep walking, keep running and keep striving."

“This philosophy encourages our youth to transform timidity into generosity, fear into fruitful action, and rigidity into service,” said the nun.

Through various initiatives, the parish creates opportunities for youth to explore their talents and engage in diverse activities.

Digital technology plays a crucial role in this process, allowing for creative and innovative expressions of faith.

Parish youth take part in choir, liturgy, and the celebration of special days - such as Grandparents' Day, Friendship Day, Father's Day, St. Vincent's Sunday, and Foundation Day.

These provide them occasions for the youth to organize and participate in meaningful events under the guidance of the FMM sisters.

Leadership skills, team-building sessions and social activities are essential components of the program, fostering a spirit of collaboration and community involvement.

Monthly recollections, gospel sharing, and both short and long retreats are held to strengthen their spiritual foundation.

Talent showcases are another highlight, providing youth with opportunities to present their abilities in a supportive environment.

Group-building games are also organized to enhance team spirit and friendship.

“Additionally, we plan short picnics and trekking excursions to promote relaxation and bonding,” said Sister Mariam.

To further engage youth, the parish holds monthly sports competitions and Bible quizzes, rewarding them to encourage continued involvement.

It was a proud moment for the parish, as two youth delegates represented at a gathering in Portugal, showcasing their commitment and growth.

“The FMM sisters, along with the MSFS Fathers, are delighted to actively participate in providing holistic formation to our youth,” said Mariam.
