April 11, Tuesday in the Octave of Easter
Acts 2:36-41 and John 20: 11-18
Who sees the Lord?
Today’s first reading tells us: be baptized and repent. The first cleanses us from the original sin and the second, from our personal sins. It offers us a very simple formula to see the Lord – to be clean. For indeed, sin clouds our vision. When we live in sin, we also fail to see the beauty that abounds which the psalm talks about ‘the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord’.
What happens if we do not see the goodness of the Lord? We live miserably because we will always feel that we don’t have enough, that we are not blessed enough. A discontent heart will always be empty and troubled.
In today’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene was troubled. In her grief, Jesus appeared to her. While Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus at first, she soon recognized Jesus when Jesus called her by her first name. Then Mary Magdalene responded and set forth announcing that she has seen the Lord.
Do we also recognize Jesus when He calls us? Do we respond to Him when He does? Moreso, are we moved to announce such an encounter? Would others believe us when we say, ‘I have seen the Lord?’ Would they see evidence that indeed we have seen the Lord?
What does it take to hear the Lord and recognize Him in our lives? Clean heart – that constant desire to know Him, to love Him and be open to His grace. This can be nourished and sustained when we receive and encounter Jesus in the Eucharist, when we go to confession and when we reach out to others and be the face of Jesus to them. It’s faith and action in one!
