April 15, Saturday in the Octave of Easter
Acts 4:13-21 and Mk 16:9-15
Many times, we show behaviors of unbelief just like the leaders, elders, and scribes in the first reading. Despite the glaring truth about Jesus’ resurrection and the remarkable signs known to many people in Jerusalem, they still refused to believe. That is unbelief, unwillingness to believe. Such is the character of a hardened heart.
It is easy to believe what we want to believe. It is easy to believe when things are going on according to our plans and expectations. But do we have the same faith when the situation does not favor us? Aren’t we just too quick to question the Lord?
When we have a hardened heart, we refuse to see God’s goodness despite the many evidence before our eyes. Our unbelief disables us from truly seeing the love and mercy of God.
In the Gospel, Jesus rebuked the disciples for their unbelief and hardened heart because they did not believe Mary Magdalene and two others to whom Jesus appeared.
On the other hand, Mary Magdalene may have shown disbelief, that is, she couldn’t fathom how things may have happened. She was in a state of amazement. But that did not deter her from doing as Jesus told her.
Disbelief could be a behavior of someone who can’t completely understand how the Lord is working in one’s life. But despite the disbelief, there is docility to obey and do as one is commanded, that is, “"Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature."
Are we moved to do our mission by our disbelief or are we crippled because of our unbelief?
