September 12, Tuesday of the 23rd Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Colossians 2:6–15; Luke 6:12–19
When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles (Luke 6:13)
At the time of their calling and three years’ accompaniment during Jesus' public ministry, the twelve disciples were a “heterogeneous” group with diverse characters and backgrounds. Some were educated and some illiterate, some refined and some rude, some old and some young, some hot-tempered and some peaceful, some innocent and some shrewd.
Simon the Zealot was a member of a rebellious group against the Roman Empire. Thomas was a courageous person, whereas Peter was a coward. The sons of Zebedee were known as ‘sons of thunder’ because of their hot-tempered nature. John was educated and seemed intellectual. Judas appeared to be a traitor.
During the three-year public ministry, Jesus transformed them into a “homogenous” group, from being a heterogeneous group to an effective mission of the Kingdom.
Jesus effectuated this interesting transformation in them without any rigorous training. Through His ‘love and presence’ He motivated, inspired, and formed them as a homogenous group.
Parents and Teachers, do you give enough time to your children? You are reminded of the greater transforming power of your ‘love and presence’ on your children than any training and formation could give them. Amen.
