Self-Reflection
December 13, Memorial of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
Tuesday of the Third Week of Advent
Daily readings: Zephania 3:1-2, 9-13, Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32
In the parable, Jesus uses the two-way response of a son's response to his father's to awaken the chief priests and elders of the people's consciousness. The first said "yes" to looking good but ignored it, while the second refused to do so, but after he reflected (regretted), he then carried out his father's orders.
The first child shows chief priests and elders who are afraid of the authorities (Israel and Rome) and won't acknowledge John the Baptist.
The second child shows sinners who can actually see how bad they are and turn to God through repentance. Jesus dared to acknowledge John the Baptist as the bearer of truth.
The second child exemplifies the value of self-reflection by having us think about all of our decisions and actions to see if they are correct or wrong. When we realize that we are wrong, we should immediately ask God for forgiveness and dare to change our wrong attitude.
Socrates said: "The unreflected life is not worth living." May we always be humble enough to reflect on our lives?
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
