Seeking and Holding the True Treasure

Background Music: Panalangin by Mark Anthony Cuevas

August 19, Monday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings:  Ezekiel 24:15-23; Matthew 19:16-22

Today’s gospel tells the story of a rich young man who asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life.

After affirming his adherence to the commandments, Jesus challenges him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. The young man leaves in sorrow, realizing his wealth is a barrier to true discipleship.

This passage teaches that following Jesus requires more than just observing commandments; it demands sacrifice. Discipleship often means letting go of the comforts and securities that distance us from God.

It invites us to reflect on what we might need to release in our own lives to pursue a deeper relationship with Christ.

Wealth can be both a blessing and a barrier. Are there areas in our lives where we prioritize material possessions over spiritual growth?

Call to Action for Catholic Living: As we reflect on the cost of discipleship, let us ask God for the grace to seek the true treasure—Jesus Himself. Amen.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
