Daily Readings: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-16; Matthew 5:27-32

Prophet Elijah was given a mission by God. He was instructed to return to Damascus, where he would anoint Hazael as king of Aram, Jehu, son of Nimshi, as king of Israel, and Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, as his prophetic successor.

Today's Gospel reminds us to follow the commandments, particularly to respect the sanctity of marriage, as committing adultery is a grave sin. Jesus explained that whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

One author states that adultery is an injustice. The adulterer fails in his commitment, injuring the sign of the covenant that the marriage bond represents, violating the rights of the other spouse, and undermining the institution of marriage by breaking the contract on which it is based.

Marriage is sacred and should be respected. It is a commitment between a couple based on love, a covenant between a man and a woman, with the presence of God.

Call to Action for Catholic Living: The commandments are God's laws, serving as a guide on how to serve God and live harmoniously with one another. They also help us to be open to the grace of the Holy Spirit and to what God can accomplish in us and through us by that grace.

Lord, we pray for married couples, that they will remain committed to their love until the end of time. Amen.
