April 21, Fourth Sunday of Easter
Good Shepherd Sunday
Daily Readings: Acts 4:8-12; 1 John 3:1-2; John 10:11-18

The first reading shows that Peter, one of Jesus' apostles, reminded the people that the healing miracles he performed came from Jesus, whom they crucified.

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Jesus is the true shepherd who is willing to die for those who put their faith in Him. Jesus, the good shepherd, is the model for a good leader. All of the characteristics of a good shepherd correspond to the qualities of a good leader.

A good shepherd is a loving person who looks out for the welfare of his sheep. He is a person with a compassionate heart. A good shepherd is trustworthy, for the sheep knows his voice and follows his voice, which implies the sheep trusts the shepherd because he follows his voice.

A good shepherd is a concerned person for he even cares for those sheep outside his flock. A good shepherd knew his flock and he knew if one was missing.

The qualities we learned from the good shepherd are very adaptable to becoming a good leader. A leader must be loving, caring, compassionate, trustworthy, relational, concerned, and, most of all, willing to sacrifice for the welfare of his people.

Jesus is the true shepherd who manifests all the qualities of a good leader. In his mercy, people received true salvation. He gave new life to people who went astray and led them to the right path to receive new life.

How about us? Are we willing to lay down our lives for the people whom we lead? Are we willing to look out for, help, care for, and sacrifice for the welfare of others who are not part of the organization?

The Lord is inviting us to look into the qualities of a good shepherd, learn and apply them to our daily lives, especially in caring for the lost and the least fortunate in our lives.

Lord, help us to manifest the qualities of a good shepherd, so we can serve you wholeheartedly.
