Nativity of St. John the Baptist
June 24, Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
Daily Readings: Is 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Lk 1:57-66, 80
The Church celebrates the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. The first reading highlights how God called Israel even from the womb, forming them to be His servant, glorified in His eyes, and a source of strength.
The second reading reminds us of John's role in heralding Jesus' arrival, proclaiming a baptism of repentance to Israel.
John humbly declared, "What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet."
The Gospel recounts John's miraculous birth. Elizabeth, favored by God, conceived in her old age. Her husband Zacharias, initially struck mute, confirmed John's name in writing, surprising their relatives.
They wondered, "What then will this child be?” recognizing the Lord's hand was upon him.
John the Baptist played a crucial role as Jesus' forerunner. He preached repentance, baptized followers, and prepared the way for Jesus, even baptizing Him and witnessing God's proclamation of Jesus as His Son.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Let us follow John's example in preparing the way for Jesus' coming.
Lord, may you help us prepare the way for your coming. Amen!
