Let’s conquer the world to attain eternal life in Jesus Christ!
January 6, Saturday of Christmas Weekday
Memorial of Saint André Bessette, religious
Daily readings: 1 John 5: 5-13; Mark 1: 7-11
Conquering the world and attaining eternal life are important themes in the First Reading of today from the First Letter of St. John. The one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God will surely conquer the world. He or she will also qualify himself or herself to obtain eternal life.
St. John tells us that the testimony of God is far superior to human testimony. God has testified to His Son. The one who does not believe in Jesus Christ is a liar. The Spirit of God dwells in Jesus. Water refers to his baptism. Blood refers to his crucifixion. The blood of Jesus cleanses all our sins. Thus the Spirit, water, and blood testify!!!
The Gospel Reading presents both John the Baptist (JB) and Jesus simultaneously. JB slowly moves into oblivion while Jesus dawns like the early morning sun. The Messianic era unfolds as Jesus begins his ministry. JB administers the eschatological sacrament of Baptism while Jesus grants the eschatological gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ submission to the baptism of JB demonstrates his spiritual maturity and his dedication to the mission.
For our sake and in our place, Jesus receives baptism. The Spirit descending from heaven and the voice from on high, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you, I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11) have two-fold functions. (i) God introduces and bears testimony for the sake of the onlookers and listeners. (ii) Jesus realizes his Sonship and his anointment is for his mission.
Saint Andre Bessette, the first saint of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, was a lay brother. It is said that through St. Joseph, he obtained numerous miracles.
