To follow Jesus

Background Music: Panalangin by Mark Anthony Cuevas

May 18, Saturday of the Seventh Week of Easter
Memorial of Saint John I, pope, martyr
Daily Readings: Acts 28:16-20, 30-31; John 21:20-25

The Romans arrested Paul in Jerusalem and turned him over, but they found no evidence of his breaking the law, so they released him. Because of the clamor of some Jews, he appealed to Cesar.

The first reading focuses on Paul's two-year stay in Rome in his lodging-hired house. Many people visited him, and he continued his preaching about the kingdom of God. With all confidence and without prohibition, he taught them the things that concern the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel reading pertains to Peter's prediction of who will betray Jesus. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “If I want him to stay behind till I come, what does it matter to you? He then told him you were to follow me.

Peter's thrust is to follow Jesus, not to give an opinion on who will betray him. Most of the time,  people love to know the latest news. People become curious about what is happening, even if it is not their concern.

They try to make up some stories, even though there is no evidence.  Consequently, they unintentionally damage the reputation of others. As Jesus emphasized to Peter, what does it matter to you? It's not your concern; your goal is to follow me.

Call to Action for Catholic Living: In this life, we must stay focused on God's invitation and not let the unimportant events around us divert us.

Lord Jesus, help us to follow your will. Amen.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
