Cross: Greatest Miracle Love
September 14, Thursday of the 23rd Week in Ordinary Time
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Daily Readings: Philippians 2:6–11; John 3:13–17
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” (John 3:14-15)
Today is the solemnity of the ‘Exaltation of Cross”. ‘A blessing in disgust’, is the expression used to speak of a painful, humiliating, and dangerous event that, somehow or other, eventually turned out to produce positive results. It is the same story about the cross of Christ.
The cross, a horrible instrument of torture and death for criminals, becomes a glorious sign of God’s great love for humanity. We celebrate the cross not as an instrument of execution but as an instrument of salvation. Jesus’ death on the cross made it an instrument of liberation from sin.
To the world, the cross is a sign of pain, tribulation, suffering, and death! But to Christ, who was lifted up on the cross, it means his “alter” of self-emptying sacrifice and “throne” of his glorious exaltation!
A cross is not merely a piece of wood or metal but a symbolic summary of Jesus’ paschal mystery—passion, death, and resurrection—through which we have been saved.
The crucifix symbolizes the greatest expression of God’s love: God’s love being transformed into a sacrifice. By celebrating the cross, we celebrate the cross turning into the greatest miracle of love. Amen.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
