Choosing Compassion Over Convention
September 9, 2024 Monday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, Priest
Daily Readings: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8; Luke 6:6-11
In a synagogue on the Sabbath, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand, highlighting the tension between the Pharisees’ rigid interpretation of the law and the spirit of the law that emphasizes compassion and mercy.
The Pharisees, adhering strictly to Sabbath rules, saw healing as prohibited work. But Jesus challenges this by asking, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” His question reveals that the true purpose of the Sabbath is to promote life and well-being.
Jesus’ act of healing is more than a demonstration of power; it’s a profound statement of his mission to restore life and prioritize love over legalism. The religious leaders, filled with fury, began plotting against him, revealing their hardened hearts in contrast to the openness of the suffering man.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: How do we balance law and compassion? Are we willing to stand up for what is right, even when it defies convention? Jesus shows us that true faithfulness is marked by love, healing, and restoration.
Let us follow His example, promoting life and loving everyone without exception. Amen.
