Indian named as new nuncio to Kazakhstan
Pope Francis appointed Msgr. George Panamthundil, a 51-year-old bishop from the Syro Malankara Archdiocese of Trivandrum (Kerala state, India), as the apostolic nuncio in Kazakhstan, making him the archbishop and titular head of Floriana.
Kazakhstan is a Central Asian country and former Soviet republic that extends from the Caspian Sea in the west to the Altai Mountains at its eastern border with China and Russia.
The appointment was made on June 16. He is currently the Chargé d’affaires of the Nunciature in Cyprus.
He is the first priest to become the nuncio of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church. It is an Eastern church in full communion with the worldwide Catholic Church.
Trivandrum was his birthplace. His parish is Saint Mary Queen of Peace Basilica in Palayam, Trivandrum, Kerala.
On February 18, 1998, he was ordained a priest for the Syro-Malankara Archdiocese of Trivandrum.
Eastern Canon Law was his Pontifical Oriental Institute (Rome) degree. On July 1, 2005, he became a Vatican diplomat.
He worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in Costa Rica, Guinea, Iraq, Austria, and Israel, the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem and Palestine, and the Pontifical Representation in Cyprus.
