India: Pope Appoints Bishop Alex Vadakumthala as Apostolic Administrator of Kottapuram
Pope Francis appointed 63-year-old Bishop Alex Joseph Vadakumthala as Bishop of Kannur, Kerala, and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kottapuram on May 1 after accepting the resignation of Most Rev. Joseph Karikkassery.
Bishop Alex was born on June 14, 1959, at Pangand in Ernakulam district and ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Verapoly on December 19, 1984. He was appointed Bishop of Kannur on February 1, 2014, and ordained Bishop on March 23, 2014.
77-year-old Bishop Joseph Karikkassery was ordained priest on December 19, 1973, appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Verapoly on November 12, 2006, and Titular Bishop of Buxentum. He was ordained Bishop on December 28, 2006, then appointed as the second Bishop of Kottapuram on December 18, 2010, and installed on February 13, 2011.
The diocese of Kottapuram has a population of about 96,950 Latin Catholics. It has 61 parishes, 132 diocesan priests, 92 priests, 253 female religious priests, and 108 educational institutions.
