Bangladesh's Rajshahi diocese marks ‘World day for Grandparents and the Elderly'
The Catholic diocese of Rajshahi in Bangladesh celebrated the first “World day for Grandparents and the Elderly” at the Good Shepherd Cathedral Church on Sunday, July 25.
There were 72 grandparents, elderlies, and 200 faithful who attended the celebration, which started with a religious procession and Holy Mass.
“It's really a grace of God for us that we are celebrating grandparent’s day for the first time,” said Father Emmanuel Rozario, vicar general of the diocese.
He described grandparents and elderly people as “agents of God's Grace and Love.”
“They are precious gifts for families. So we need to learn from them and to take care of them,” said the priest.
Pope Francis, in a message released earlier for the occasion, said grandparents are “a treasure in the family.”
On behalf of grandparents, Mr. Gabriel expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father who “has shown loving concern for us and announces a day for the grandparents and elders.”
“We are elders now. We are not able to work as before but we expect minimum loving care from our children and grandchildren,” he said.
One grandmother said she was “happy” to join the special program and would like to continue to be happy “in our last days and to be part of our family.”
“We pray for our children so that they may show their loving concern for us,” she said. - Nikhil Gomez / RVA News
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
