Vietnam: Former bishop of Long Xuyên Diocese dies at 79

Bishop emeritus Joseph Trần Xuân Tiếu of Long Xuyên Diocese.

A former bishop of Long Xuyên Diocese, Vietnam, died on July 7, 2025. He was 79.

Bishop emeritus Joseph Trần Xuân Tiếu was born on Aug 20, 1945, in the Lộc Hòa district (then called Phú Ốc) of the city of Nam Dinh.

At 12, he started his seminary education at the Pius XII Minor Seminary, followed by the St. Joseph Seminary in Saigon.

In 1965, after finishing his seminary education, he did further study in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.

He received his priestly ordination in August 1974. He was the secretary to Bishop Nguyễn Khắc Ngư until 1995 when he was named pastor of the Long Xuyên Cathedral, professor of moral theology at the Thánh Quý Major Seminary in Cần Thơ, and vicar general of the diocese.

He became the Coadjutor Bishop of Long Xuyên, Viet Nam, on June 3, 1999.

On October 2, 2003, he became the Bishop of Long Xuyên. On February 23, 2019, he resigned as the bishop of Long Xuyên.

As a bishop, he undertook several pastoral initiatives reaching out to people with compassion, especially people at the periphery.

He was a priest for 50 years and a bishop for 25 years.
