The archbishop of Seoul expressed his sorrow over the victims of a Jeju Air passenger plane at Muan
International Airport.

“It is my fervent prayer that God will envelop their souls and give comfort and strength to the families left behind,” said Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taek in his message of condolences.

“We share the pain of the bereaved families and everyone who has faced indescribable pain and sorrow due to this tragic accident,” he also said

A total of 179 people perished when the plane, a Boeing 737, crashed in the airport while attempting an emerging landing on December 29.

Only two flight attendants, a man and a woman, survived the accident.

According to the Muan Fire Department, a bird strike and bad weather might have caused the crash.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the exact cause.

Officials have also revealed that they are reviewing over 100 aircraft of the same model, B737-800, to pinpoint any issues with the maintenance history of engines and landing gears.

“I also pray for all those who are doing their best on the ground. We urge the authorities to do their utmost to help and resolve the incident,” said Archbishop Chung.

“Once again, may the love and mercy of Christ be with you in this time of suffering, and we pray that all those who have been sacrificed may rest in the arms of God for eternity,” the prelate further said.

The Muan International Airport runway will be closed for investigations until January 7.
