Pope Francis urged Singapore to prioritize inclusivity and the well-being of marginalized groups amid its remarkable growth and success.

On September 12, as part of his Apostolic visit to the nation, the Pope delivered a landmark address at the National University of Singapore’s Cultural Centre.

While praising Singapore’s rapid development and pragmatic approach, the Pope emphasized the need to balance progress with compassion, particularly for the poor, elderly, and migrant workers.

"Singapore’s growth and resilience are inspiring," Pope Francis stated, "but the true measure of progress lies in how a society treats its most vulnerable."

He acknowledged the country’s achievements in public housing, education, and healthcare but cautioned against allowing pragmatism to overshadow the needs of those on the fringes of society.

The Pope called for continued efforts to support the disadvantaged, particularly migrant workers, who play a crucial role in Singapore's economy.

"It is essential to ensure fair wages and dignified working conditions for those who contribute so much to your society," he remarked, highlighting the vital contributions of this group.

Pope Francis also expressed hope that Singapore would deepen its commitment to social justice and inclusion, particularly as it celebrates the centennial of its founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.

"As you honor your past, may you also look to a future where every person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive," he added.

The Pope's message underscored the importance of creating a compassionate and inclusive society, reinforcing his broader call for nations worldwide to prioritize the dignity and well-being of all people, especially the most marginalized.

Pope Francis’s visit to Singapore, from September 11 to 13, 2024, marked the first papal visit to the city-state since Pope John Paul II’s brief stopover in 1986.

This visit is part of his Apostolic Journey across the Asia-Pacific region.

Upon arrival on September 11, Pope Francis was greeted by Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth, Edwin Tong, alongside other officials and volunteers.

A welcoming performance included youth singing in multiple languages, reflecting the country's multicultural heritage.
