Pope Francis appoints new Taipei auxiliary bishop

Pope Francis named Father Peter Chao Yung-Chi, clergy of the Diocese of Chaiyi, as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Taipei, Taiwan.
The announcement was made public through a Holy See bulletin on February 2.
Before his appointment, Father Chao served as episcopal chancellor and parish priest of the Cathedral of Saint John in Chiayi since 2016.
His appointment came five years after the installation of Taipei Archbishop Thomas Chung An-Zu in 2020.
As auxiliary bishop, the Holy Father also assigned to him the titular see of Rusgunie.
Father Chao was born on March 28, 1973, in Taichung City, Taiwan. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology at the Saint Robert Bellarmine Faculty and a licentiate in religious studies from the Department of Religious Studies of Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan.
He was ordained a priest on February 3, 2001, and served as parish priest of the Cathedral of Saint John in Chiayi from 2001 to 2002.
He also served as deputy parish priest of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chiayi (2002-2003), vice-rector of the regional seminary of Taiwan (2003-2015), parish priest of Immaculate Conception and Saint Catherine, Dalin (2015-2022). He was a chaplain of the Anna Nursing Home and the Chung-Jen Junior College of Nursing, Health Science and Management, Chiayi (2016-2022).
