Philippines: Pope Francis Appoints New Bishop for the Diocese of Balanga
On December 3, 2024, Pope Francis appointed Fr. Rufino "Jun" Sescon Jr. as the new bishop of the Diocese of Balanga, which has been vacant since July 2023.
Fr. Sescon Jr, 52, currently serves as rector of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno (Quiapo Church) in Manila.
Ordained in 1998, Sescon previously served as the personal secretary to Cardinal Jaime Sin and held various key roles in the Archdiocese of Manila, including chancellor and administrator of Villa San Miguel.
He also ministered as chaplain of Greenbelt Chapel and priest-in-charge of Mary Mother of Hope Chapel in Makati City.
Beyond his pastoral duties, Sescon is the commissioner for the Formation of the Laity and Christian Communities,director of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Lay Formation Center, and a member of the Presbyteral Council.
He also serves as executive director of the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).
The Diocese of Balanga, covering the entire Bataan province, has been without a bishop since Bishop Ruperto Santos was installed in the Diocese of Antipolo.
Fr. Sescon’s appointment marks a new chapter for the faithful in Bataan.
