Philippines: Discalced Carmelite contemplative nun dies at 93

Sr. Mary Niere OCD is a member of the Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mt. Carmel (Discalced Carmelites-Contemplatives) nuns of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.

A Filipina nun, Sr. Mary Niere, one of the pioneering members of the Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mt. Carmel (Discalced Carmelites-Contemplatives) nuns of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga, died on March 15. She was 93.

She was born on September 24m 1931,

Sr. Niere has been a contemplative nun in the Discalced Carmelite congregation since its foundation in 1961, reported the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.

She is a well-loved speaker on prayer and the contemplative life in Christian discipleship and has authored the following spiritual works: "The Gospel of Contemplation," "Celibate Love and Friendship," and "How to Pray When We Need to Pray."

Her writings have adapted in simpler, condensed terms the spiritual teachings on prayer and growth in the Christian life from the teachings of Carmelite reformers St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross.

The funeral Mass for Sr. Mary of the Agnus Dei, OCD, was presided over on March 17, 2025, at 6:30 AM, by Archbishop Julius Tonel, at the Carmelite Monastery of the Queen of Angels and of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, RT Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City.
