Notre Dame University Bangladesh celebrates second convocation with grandeur

Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) celebrated its Second Convocation on its campus at Motijheel in Dhaka on February 8.

The event aims to recognize the achievements of its graduating students, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.

The event, attended by approximately 3000 people, was held under the theme "Let Your Light Shine," emphasizing the university's commitment to academic excellence and moral values.

The convocation was presided over by Professor Dr. Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Ministry of Railways, and Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.

Representing the President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of NDUB, Professor Kabir Khan addressed the graduating class, stating, "Graduates are being handed over the keys to unlock the future full of possibilities. They are poised to enter a world undergoing rapid transformation, brimming with challenges and abundant with opportunities.

He further added, "I firmly believe that NDUB has equipped the graduates with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to excel in their chosen fields, and this university will continue to play a significant role in advancing their higher education and contributing to the creation of a prosperous and progressive Bangladesh."

The ceremony commenced with a grand academic procession, followed by recitations from the Holy Qur’an, Bible, Gita, and Tripitaka, reflecting NDUB’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Professor Dr. Fr. Patrick D. Gaffney, CSC, Vice Chancellor of NDUB, delivered the welcome address. The convocation speaker, Dr. R. Scott Appleby, Keough-Hesburgh Professor of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA, inspired the audience with his speech.

Distinguished guests, including Professor Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossen, Member of the University Grants Commission, Archbishop Bejoy N. D’Cruze, OMI, and Dr. Fr. George Kamal Rozario, CSC, Chairman of NDUB Board of Trustees, graced the event with their presence and shared their insights on education and personal growth.

The Deputy Registrar of NDUB, Fr. Ashim T. Gonsalves, CSC, conferred degrees upon the graduates.

Vice Chancellor Gaffney reflected on the significance of the convocation, stating, "This event marks a moment for celebration, gratitude, and reflection."

He added, "While we joyfully congratulate our graduates, we also acknowledge their journey ahead, filled with both challenges and opportunities."

He further encouraged the graduates, saying, "You have learned new ways of understanding the world and acquired practical skills to take up professional responsibilities. Aim for goals that showcase your abilities and contribute to societal transformation."

Archbishop D’Cruze acknowledged the graduates' hard work and perseverance, remarking, "You have overcome many obstacles to reach this milestone. The knowledge and values you have gained will guide you as responsible citizens."

Father Rozario, the Chairman of the NDUB Board of Trustees, urged the graduates to lead purposeful lives, stating, "Be bold in your dreams, humble in your successes, and resilient in your challenges. True success lies in the positive impact you make in the lives of others."

The convocation also recognized academic excellence by awarding the Chancellor’s Gold Medal and Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal to top-performing students. Several bronze medals were presented in different categories, and the Fr. Basil Anthony M. Moreau Gold Medal Award for Outstanding Faculty Member was also conferred.

The event concluded with vibrant cultural performances by students, followed by an electrifying band performance by "Shironamhin," adding a festive note to the grand celebration. – Nikhil Gomes
