An Indian Catholic nun, a physician, has opted to work in a government-run hospital in the southern state of Kerala.
Dr. Jean Rose is the first nun to serve as a medical officer in a government hospital in Kerala.
She is a member of the Sisters of the Destitute (S.D.), a Syro-Malabar Catholic women's religious institute.
She has been appointed at the Thaluk Government Hospital in Kattappana, Idukki district of Kerala.
The hospital in Kattappana offers high-quality healthcare services to patients of all ages.
However, opting to work as a physician in a public hospital such as Kattappana is exceptional for Sister Jean Rose because such a hospital is an opportunity to serve among the tribal backward sections, according to her.
Earlier, she had served ten years at Family Health Center, a private Catholic hospital in Marayur, Kerala.
She was asked to serve in the Marayur region, where many tribes and tribal groups live.
The 52-year-old Sister Jean Rose completed MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and a master's in anesthesia from St. John's Medical College, Bangalore, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
St. John's Medical College is a Catholic institute under the auspices of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI).
There are hundreds of Catholic nuns who are physicians in India, but most serve in a private or church-run hospitals or healthcare centers. Serving in a government or private hospital for Catholic nuns in India is rare.
