India: Outrage in Udalguri, Assam following Catholic Church burnt
Tension has gripped Udalguri district, Assam of Northeast India, after a 75-year-old Catholic Church was allegedly set on fire by miscreants on the night of January 15.
The incident took place around 10:30 PM in the Ambagaon area, coinciding with the Assamese Bhogali Bihu celebrations, triggering widespread outrage.
Residents have expressed shock and anger, stressing the importance of upholding the secular values of the country.
"Such acts of violence are unacceptable, and the authorities must conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice," said one resident.
The Udalguri police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the matter, focusing on identifying the culprits and preventing any potential communal tensions.
Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro condemned the attack, directing the district administration to ensure a detailed probe and take stringent action against those responsible.
BTR Executive Members Ranjit Basumatary and Dhanjay Basumatary also visited the site, urging the community to maintain peace and harmony.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with people from various communities demanding swift justice and stronger measures to prevent such attacks.
