India: National Day of Prayer held in Delhi

The Ecumenical Commission, Archdiocese of Delhi, organized the National Day of Prayer at Sacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi, on October 2, 2024.

The Ecumenical Commission, Archdiocese of Delhi, organized the National Day of Prayer at Sacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi, on October 2, commemorating the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the National Father of India. 

The day honors Gandhi, one of the key leaders of the Indian independence movement and a pioneer of nonviolence philosophy.

The National Day of Prayer program began with a blessing by Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto of Delhi. 

“We offered special prayers for the Delhi government and the people of India,” said Divine Word Father Norbert Herman, convenor of the Ecumenical Commission, Archdiocese of Delhi.

The program was attended by Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara of Faridabad (Syro-Malabar Eastern Rite), Bishop Thomas Mar Aprem of the Syro-Malabar Church, as well as pastors, leaders of many denominations and Christains. 

There were many prayer intentions for the judiciary, workers, farmers, and migrants. 

Students from St. Michael's Junior School, St. Agnelo's School, and the Caleb Institute of Spirituality and Theological Centre under the Church of India, Delhi, performed a special prayer dance.

A.C. Michael, president of the Federation of Catholic Associations of the Archdiocese of Delhi and a former member of the 

Delhi Minorities Commission, concluded the program with a vote of thanks.

At the end, all recited the national anthem. Over 400 people attended the event.
