India: John Dayal among recipients of the prestigious Quaide Milleth Award

An Indian Catholic journalist and human rights activist, John Dayal, is one of the three recipients of the prestigious Quaide Milleth Award for Probity in Political and Public Life for 2024. The Quaide Milleth Educational and Social Trust (QUEST) announced. 

The other two renowned human rights campaigners are Navaid Hamid and Vipin Kumar Tripathi who have been awarded this year for their relentless dedication to civil liberties, religious freedom, and social justice.

Beginning in 2015, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Quest, the prize honors those who exhibit extraordinary commitment to constitutional ideals, secularism, pluralism, inclusivism, and the welfare of underprivileged groups.

The prize is named for Quaide Milleth Mohamed Ismail Sahib, a beloved statesman distinguished for his advocacy of communal harmony and justice and for helping to shape independent India.

Founded in 1974 in honor of Quaide Milleth Mohamed Ismail Sahib., especially for the less fortunate, the company is dedicated to social and educational empowerment.

Dayal is a well-known proponent of religious freedom, civil liberties, and human rights both inside and outside of India. 

He founded the All India Christian Council and served as a National Integration Council member. He has been at the forefront of safeguarding the rights of Dalits, minorities, and other underprivileged groups.

Former All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat president Navaid Hamid has been a strong voice for the oppressed.

Having been General Secretary of the Movement for Empowerment of Muslim Indians and a member of the National Integration Council, he has devoted his life to promoting the welfare and rights of underprivileged groups, especially Muslims.

Leading physicist and former IIT Delhi professor Prof. Dr. Vipin Kumar Tripathi is well-known for his human rights advocacy. Using his Sadbhaav Mission, he has been relentless in advocating peace, social harmony, and victim rehabilitation initiatives for everyone in India affected by sectarian violence.

Dr. V. Vasanthi Devi, former vice-chancellor, M.S. University, and eminent educationist; Bishop Dr. Devasagayam, Church of South India (retired); A.S. Paneerselvan, former reader's editor, The Hindu; and M.G. Dawood Miakhan, general secretary, Quaide Milleth Educational and Social Trust (ex officio) selected the awardees.

The Quaide Milleth Award has been given to people and groups since its founding who have been vital in maintaining democratic values and human rights.

Among others are past recipients Teesta Setalvad, Hamid Ansari, Harsh Mander, Aruna Roy, A.G. Noorani, and N. Ram.

The ceremony honoring the efforts of the 2024 honorees will be held soon. Through this awareness, Quest keeps the heritage of Quaide Milleth Mohamed Ismail Sahib alive and motivates the next generations to aim for an inclusive, secular, and fair society.
