India: A Catholic village in Imphal burned, leaving 45 families destitute

Khopibung Catholic Village in Imphal suffered a tragic incident last evening when the entire village was engulfed in flames, leaving 44 families homeless.
Villagers fought courageously throughout the day to defend their homes, but negotiations between them and an attacking group ended in disaster between 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. on June 12.
Besides destroying the houses, the fire destroyed significant structures within the village, including the Catholic Church, which held significant religious and cultural significance.
During his tenure, Bishop Dennis initially built the Mary Immaculate Parish church in Imphal.
In addition, a mobile tower was also engulfed by flames, further compounding the loss.
As a result of the evacuation, women and children were kept safe, minimizing the risk of casualties among the community's most vulnerable members.
According to Census of India data, Gopibung Kuki village, where the incident occurred, has a population of 298 and comprises 45 households.
Kangpokpi serves as the Community Development Block for the Sadar Hills West subdistrict. Senapati, the district headquarters, is 33 kilometers from Gopibung.
Khopibung Catholic Village residents are urged to extend their support, solidarity, and prayers to the community during this challenging time as they rebuild their lives.
As a result of the incident, the authorities are actively investigating the case and assisting the families who have been affected.
