India: Catholic Archbishop meets Manipur's Chief Minister

On the eve of the ongoing Durga Puja festival, Archbishop Dominic Lumon of Imphal and his team met with the Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, on October 4.

Both spoke on the current affairs of the state and religious affairs.

The meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, a northeastern Indian state.

During the meeting, both parties discussed and exchanged views on the various issues of state affairs.

They also had a fruitful discussion on the state's peaceful co-existence and cultural harmony.

The informal meeting was a part of the inter-religious dialogue that is needed for harmonious living amongst different ethnicities.

The Archbishop, along with Catholic laymen, presented the Chief Minister with a traditional coat and a shawl.

Manipur State is inhabited by more than 32 tribes, which follow different religious faiths and traditions.

The majority of the population belongs to the Meitei community, which includes mostly the inhabitants of the valley. The sub-tribes are scattered both in the hills and in the Imphal Valley region in modern-day Manipur.

The Meitei people are an ethnic group indigenous to the northeastern Indian state of Manipur.

The Archbishop and the Chief Minister of Manipur met earlier, wherein N. Biren Singh invited all religious leaders from different faiths in the state.

On previous occasions, Catholic representatives were presented by Archbishop Dominic Lumon and Father Albert Leivon, Manipur Catholic Youth Organization Director.

As per the Census of 2011, Hindus are the majority in Manipur State. Hindus constitute 41.39% of the state's population. They are present in all four districts of the state.

The Muslim population is 8.41%, whereas the Christian population is 41.29% of the total population of 2.85 million.

In Manipur State, Christians play an important role in the elect in terms of their sizable population. Catholics are recognized for playing an important role in promoting education, healthcare, social development, and the peaceful coexistence of the state's various communities. - Tungthang Zou
