India: Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore Liturgy Commission unveils updated Hymnbook
On September 21, 2024, a significant moment unfolded at Santhome Cathedral as the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore Liturgy Commission proudly presented the updated edition of the much-loved hymn book, "பாடுமனமே" (Song of the Heart).
The event held deep spiritual meaning as it coincided with the 19th anniversary of Archbishop George Antonysamy’s Episcopal Ordination, bringing an added layer of grace and reverence to the celebration.
The new edition of "பாடுமனமே" beautifully bridges tradition with innovation. While preserving the beloved hymn order familiar to generations of worshippers, this updated version introduces new hymns that enrich both the spiritual and musical depth of the collection, making it a timeless resource for communal worship.
In his heartfelt foreword, Archbishop Antonysamy expressed his profound encouragement, highlighting the hymnbook as a vital tool for deepening the worship experience throughout the archdiocese.
His words underscored the importance of this spiritual milestone, marking the release as a significant contribution to the liturgical life of the faithful.
During the release ceremony, Father Vincent Chinnadurai delivered a moving address, emphasizing the continuous efforts of the Liturgy Commission to elevate the liturgical experience.
He spoke about the commission’s commitment to ensuring that worship remains a profound source of inspiration and unity within the community, with the new edition of "பாடுமனமே" standing as a testament to that mission.
Published by St. Paul's Publications, the publishing house of the Society of St. Paul, the updated hymnbook was produced with meticulous care.
Father Michael John SSP, responsible for overseeing all Tamil publications, played a crucial role in ensuring the high quality and spiritual resonance of the final product.
His close collaboration with the Liturgy Commission brought the vision of "பாடுமனமே" to life, once again demonstrating the society's dedication to spreading Christ’s message through modern media.
The new edition also honors the visionary efforts of Fr. Patrick, Parish Priest of Adyar, whose foresight 30 years ago initiated the creation of the original hymnbook.
His enduring legacy continues to bless the faithful, as his thoughtful initiative has now been passed down to new generations of worshippers who cherish its hymns.
Special acknowledgments were given to Fr. Jeyakumar for his leadership in guiding this project, and to Fr. Michael John SSP for his dedication to incorporating valuable suggestions and ensuring the successful completion of the hymnbook. Their collaborative work was instrumental in creating a spiritual treasure for the archdiocese.
Father Arul Jesu Doss, Secretary of the Liturgy Commission, concluded the event with deep gratitude to all who contributed to the realization of this important project.
He emphasized that "பாடுமனமே" would continue to inspire the faithful, enriching their worship and strengthening the spiritual fabric of the archdiocese for generations to come.
More than just a hymnbook release, the event symbolized the enduring faith and collaborative spirit that sustains and uplifts the community.
