Fostering fellowship in times of suffering is the Gospel for the time!

Raza, or Most Solemn Eucharistic Celebration in Syro-Malabar Rite officiated by Cardinal Alencherry to mark the occassion of the 1950th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of St. Thomas the Apostle

Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church inaugurates the public gathering to celebrate the Syro-Malabar Church day, which coincides with the 1950th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of St. Thomas, the Apostle

The “Gospel of the times is to foster community and fellowship not only in times of prosperity but also in times of suffering and pain”, said George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.

The Cardinal was addressing a public meeting celebrating the 1950th anniversary of the martyrdom of St Thomas, the Apostle of India. Syro-Malabar Church holds July 3 as Sabhadinam or the ‘Church Day'.

The celebration began in the morning with the most solemn Holy Eucharistic celebration, Raza.

Bishops, priests, major superiors and invited lay people participated in the Church-Day celebrations at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia at Kakkanad, Kochi in Kerala.

St. Thomas the Apostle, who stated “Let us also go, that we may die with him”, teaches us that sufferings and difficulties in life can be faced much better with the support of the community”, continued the Cardinal. “That is the living witness demanded of all Christians today”.

In the meeting, Father Michael Karimattam, a noted Scripture scholar, was invested with the honorary title of ‘Malpan’, or distinguished teacher of faith, for his commendable contributions in sharing the Good News through Bible Comics.
