Former bishop of Laos passes away at 82
Bishop Jean Khamsé Vithavongthe, Vicar Apostolic Emeritus of Vientiane in Laos, died on December 8. He was 82.
Vithavongthe, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), was a committed missionary.
He dedicated his time, energy, and pastoral work to the people despite many challenges due to a restrictive regime in Laos.
He primarily worked in the Christian-restricted northern Laos cities of Luang Prabang and Xam Neua.
According to Fr. Peter Preecha Thamniyom, a former superior of OMI Thailand, Vithavongthe was ailing for a long time due to health concerns and was bedridden. He was having a difficult time communicating.
Both were friends and shared many moments of common concerns, said Thamniyom.
Vithavongthe was an intelligent person and loved music, according to Thamniyom.
Vithavongthe was “a dedicated leader of the Catholic Church in Laos, known for his unwavering faith and service to the Laotian people.
His family, friends, and the entire community of Laos will sorely miss Bishop Khamsé, according to a note from the Apostolic Nunciature in Thailand.
