Filipino SVD Priest passes away at 90

Fr. Gregorio Buenavista SVD (90).

Fr. Gregorio Buenavista passed away after a fruitful religious life at the age of 90.

He was born in Dumaguete, a component city in central Philippines, in 1934.

Buenavista dreamed of becoming a lawyer and took a pre-law course at St. Paul College in Dumaguete. But he was called to a religious life later.

In 1955, he entered Christ the King Seminary. He made his profession of religious vows in 1959 and was ordained in 1965.

He dedicated his life as a priest to strengthening families. His longest ministry was with Worldwide Marriage Encounter, the largest marriage enrichment organization in the world.

He was the national chaplain of the Marriage Encounter movement and served as prefect of seminarians at Binmaley in Pangasinan.

He was a director, chaplain, and vice president at the Divine World University in Tacloban, Leyte, and a professor at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City.

He served as President of the Divine Word College of San Jose in Occidental Mindoro. He was also president of the Divine Word College of Laoag. 

He served as chaplain at St. Luke's Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Manila.

He was an assistant priest at Sacred Heart Parish, Kamuning, Quezon City. 

Buenavista retired in 2009 at Villa Cristo Rey.
