After long years of service with the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Brother Valentin Gruener passed away on September 14 at a hospital in Abra, a province more than 400 kilometers south of Manila.

In a social media post the SVD-Northern Philippines Province expressed grief over his death.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Br. Valentin Gruener, SVD, a devoted missionary brother who tirelessly served the Church and the people of God, especially in Abra. Br. Valentin returned to our Lord at 2:54 PM today, while surrounded by care at the Christian Hospital of Bangued.”

The congregation asks for prayers for their departed brother and for the community he bereaved.

“Let us offer our prayers for the eternal rest of his soul, and for comfort and strength to his family and the SVD community during this time of grief. May Br. Valentin now enjoy the fullness of life in God's loving embrace.”

When Gruener was an octogenarian, many have wondered how he managed to go to remote areas in Abra to do his ministry.

Many netizens expressed grief over his passing. Some conveyed gratitude.

“Rest in peace Bro. Valentin. Thanks for donating materials for the construction of our chapel,” posted a certain Sha R On.

“I will always be grateful to Bro. Valentine for supporting me financially when I was studying in College,” Melanie Blaza said. “May you rest in paradise Apo Val.”

“My prayers condolences Brother,” posted Lyndon Dalipan Salimbay. “Rest in peace. We will never forget your unending support and services to the entire church of Malibcong.”

His congregation implored heaven for the soul of their departed brother.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”
