The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the four-year extension of the bishop appointment agreement between China and the Vatican.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on October 22, 2024, that China and the Vatican decided to extend the temporary agreement between the two parties regarding the appointment of bishops for another four years. This is the third extension of the agreement.

At a regular press conference of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, a reporter asked China to confirm and comment on the news that China and the Vatican had decided to postpone the interim agreement on the appointment of bishops.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded that the "Interim Agreement between China and the Vatican on the Appointment of Bishops" has been extended twice in 2020 and 2022 since it was signed in 2018.

Both sides have positively evaluated the effectiveness of the implementation of the agreement.

Following amicable discussions, China and the Vatican decided to postpone the aforementioned matter. Lin Jian emphasized that the two sides will maintain talks in a constructive spirit and continue to promote the improvement of Sino-Vatican relations.
