10 Killed, including Nun, in Indonesia's mount Lewotobi eruption
The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in the Wulanggitang subdistrict of East Flores Regency on November 3 claimed ten lives, including that of a nun from the Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) congregation.
The catastrophic event, which unleashed ash and molten lava, left a trail of widespread devastation.
“The incident occurred last night at around 11:57 p.m. Central Indonesian Time. Ten people have died,” confirmed Hironimus Lamawuran, Head of the East Flores Communication and Information Department (Kominfo), in a statement on Monday, November 4, 2024.
Preliminary reports identified the victims as eight adults and one child, all residents of Klatanlo Village in the Wulanggitang District. “Most of the victims were killed by debris from the collapsing buildings they lived in,” Lamawuran explained.
Among those who perished was Sister Nikolin Padjo of the SSpS congregation. She died when her convent in Boru collapsed during the eruption.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Sr. Nikolin Katharina Padjo, SSpS, died on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 12:30 a.m. Central Indonesian Time, as a victim of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi,” read an official statement from the World SSpS.
According to the statement, Sister Nikolin was trapped by the hot lava that reached her room. At 60 years old, she was serving as the superior of the Sanctissima Trinitas community in Hokeng, Flores.
“The SSpS community mourns the loss of this devoted missionary, known for her unwavering spirit, service, and dedication. Farewell, beloved missionary of God. Rest in eternal peace,” the congregation said, also calling for prayers for her eternal repose.
In response to the tragedy, the Diocese of Larantuka has mobilized relief efforts. Parishes and religious communities have been urged to provide material aid, volunteer support, and financial assistance for the affected victims.
These efforts are being coordinated by Caritas Larantuka, under the leadership of Fr. Fransiskus Xaverius Hurint.
This eruption serves as a sobering reminder of the ever-present danger posed by Indonesia’s active volcanoes. Authorities are closely monitoring Mount Lewotobi for potential follow-up eruptions in the coming days.
