December 17, Saturday of the Third Week of Advent
Daily readings: Genesis 49:2,8-1-, Gospel: Matthew 1:1-17
Matthew recorded the genealogy of Jesus three times over the course of fourteen days (twice in "seven days"). According to the Jewish religion, the numbers three and seven are significant.
As a requirement for being the Messiah, this list of Jesus' ancestors shows that he is a descendant of Abraham and David, even though it is from Joseph's side of the family.
Matthew's account of Jesus' genealogy shows that there is a chain of important people in Jesus' family tree, which shows what kind of person Jesus was from a Jewish point of view.
This genealogy lists the names of four women from the Old Testament (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Uriah's wife) whose lives were not always good. This demonstrates that Jesus' birth was intended to be absolutely unusual and unexpected. God's creation is very exquisite.
Similarly, our lives are uniquely organized and designed. God is active in our lives. According to Jeremiah 1:5, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew [you] before you were born; I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Through today's gospel reading, we will hopefully always be thankful for our lives. Regardless of the challenges, flaws, and issues in our lives, we are eternally grateful and confident that God is always with us.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
