Cambodia: Children’s camp held to impart life and social skills
More than 300 children gathered at Phnom Penh Thmey Pastoral Sector to reflect and learn about social knowledge and daily life.
The theme was "Bright future for all children" led by Youth, Adults, Children and Families Office from May 27 to 29.
Eight-year-old Lin dane from Prek Taten community said this was her first time attending the camp.
"I was happy to meet a lot of friends and get more gifts," Dane said. "Besides having fun, she learned to dance, collect garbage in the village, learn to clean and wash, learn to perform on stage.”
“What I learned helped me become a better child,” she added.
Van Sophary, a scout leader from Champa parish of the Mekong pastoral sector which is an area with Vietnamese children, said she had been involved in the Office for three years.
Sophary said that the experience of leading children and through the guidance of the elders and scout leaders made her know her abilities.
"At this event, I know more games for playing with the children in my parish after returning," she added.
Sophary continued that when she returns to her parish she will "expand the Scouts to have more children by gathering more children outside the village, help children to speak more Khmer to be able to unite with children inside and outside the village, and apply what we have experience in this program.”
San Saroeun, Director of Youth, Adults, Children and Families Office said that this program is designed for children to make new friends and build their relationships and to provide children with moral education in life, care for the environment, love for the community and their families.
At the beginning of the first evening, all the children participated in preparing and praying the Taize together.
Through the activities of children, Saroeun said, “These activities give us strength and lead our office to see more fruits in the future.”
The Youth, Adults, Children and Families Office of the Phnom Penh Vicariate was established in 2003 to orient children, adults, and families to participate in the church and society, and to educate them on how to live in faith.
On the third day of the Scout Camp, children living near the Phnom Penh Thmey Pastoral Sector came to celebrate International Children's Day, bringing the total to more than 500.
The prelate also urged them to pay attention to the scout law, and pray to God.
In his homily, Bishop Olivier said children and Catholics are to take this opportunity to join the 20 million children who are suffering from malnutrition and the millions who have died of malnutrition and lack of health services as well.
He asked all the priests and committees of Phnom Penh Vicariate in the year of synod 2021-2023 to think about how to give children the opportunity to meet and make new friends, understand the life, love the environment, love God and others to make the community a great family that gathers children everywhere.
He added that children's gathering is a chance for non-Catholic children to know the church and reflect on life as children in today's society.
The children came from six pastoral sectors of Phnom Penh Vicariate: North of Phnom Penh, South of Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh Thmey, Takhmao, Bassac, and Mekong.
The community also launched balloons to celebrate children’s day all over the world. – Kagna Kao/RVAKhmer
